Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda movie to release in 2027: What we know so far

Nintendo and Sony have been quiet about the live-action Legend of Zelda movie since its announcement in November 2023. At that time, Miyamoto announced plans for a live-action adaptation of "The Legend of Zelda," with himself and Avi Arad producing on social media.
Wes Ball, known for directing "The Maze Runner" trilogy and "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," is set to helm the film. Ball will also produce alongside Joe Hartwick Jr. under their Oddball Entertainment banner.
The project is a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment, with Nintendo providing the majority of the financing. Casting and story details are still in development.
In a statement shared in 2023, Miyamoto said: “I have been working on the live-action film of ‘The Legend of Zelda’ for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films. I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film, with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
Nintendo’s plans for a "Zelda" movie grew after the company collaborated with Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment on "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." Released in April 2023, the animated comedy became a major box office success, earning over $1.3 billion worldwide and ranking as the 18th highest-grossing film globally.
