UP on high alert as DGP orders heightened security measures

Lucknow: In response to intelligence inputs and heightened national security concerns, Uttar Pradesh director general of police (DGP) Prashant Kumar has issued a statewide high-alert directive, ordering a multi-tiered security clampdown across the state with immediate effect.
The top cop has directed all district police chiefs, commissioners, and range officers—particularly those in districts bordering other states—to ramp up surveillance, intensify vehicle checks, and maintain constant inter-state coordination to pre-empt any possible terror or criminal activity.
All districts sharing borders with neighboring states have been instructed to set up barricades and permanent checkpoints. The DGP emphasised round-the-clock screening of vehicles and individuals deemed suspicious.
The directives also include strengthening security at all sensitive infrastructure points, such as airports, metro stations, railway stations, bus depots, religious places, malls, and markets. Police teams have been deployed for regular checks at hotels, dharamshalas, inns, roadside eateries, and restaurants to monitor the movement of suspicious individuals.
With Uttar Pradesh being home to several world-renowned religious and heritage sites—such as Ayodhya, Mathura, Varanasi, and the Taj Mahal—police units have been instructed to ensure foolproof security arrangements in accordance with established SOPs. Extra attention is being paid to safeguarding foreign tourists.
All zones and commissionerates have been ordered to conduct a manpower audit to ensure the optimum deployment of police personnel. In addition, every police station and line must maintain fully equipped Quick Response Teams (QRTs) with bulletproof jackets and ammunition, ready to respond to any law-and-order or terror-related emergency.
The state police chief has also instructed district police units to conduct intensive tenant verification drives in residential areas and newly developed colonies, warning against treating the exercise as a mere formality.
