Lotus flowers are a delight to see, and their soft colours and aroma add the perfect aesthetic to a home. But most people think that Lotus can only be grown in dirty water or large ponds, and thus never try to grow it. And so here we mention some steps to grow it at home.

The first step is, of course, buying good-quality seeds to grow. If you're planning to grow Lotus in a container or indoors, make sure it is a miniature variety. The seeds should look shiny, have a bloom point on one end, and should not have major cracks.

Lotus seeds have a hard outer shell that will prevent water from entering, which in turn will result in no germination. So take a sandpaper and gently file the seeds from the ends and around its shape.

Once the filing is done and the seeds feel a little light, soak them in warm water until they germinate. Make sure to use a see-through container so that you can spot when the leaves start appearing. Also, change the water daily to keep it fresh and prevent mould.

In healthy seeds, germination will not take more than 10 days. You will see that the seeds will start to swell and sprout, and little green shoots will emerge, followed by tiny roots.

Once the seeds have sprouted and the shoots are 4–6 inches long, move them to the grow bags or pots. Make sure the pot is shallow but large in diameter, and does not have any big drain holes, as the soil needs to be wet and loamy.

Lotus needs heavy and loamy soil to grow. Make a mix of soil, compost, sand, and water, and make sure there is extra water in the soil. As the soil mix absorbs the water, keep adding more till some is floating above the soil.

Now, once the shoots and roots emerge, slowly make holes in the soil, and then add the seeds and plant them down in the soil. Do not bury them too deep, and leave the top of the shoot above the soil.

Lotus flowers love the sun and warmth, and thus it is important to keep the plant somewhere it will get 5 hours (at least) of sunlight daily.

Soon, you will see that some floating leaves have appeared in the pot, and they are above the water. At this stage, keep checking the water level and make sure the soil is completely submerged in water.

With a liquid-based fertiliser added to the soil once a month, you might see the blooming Lotus as early as 3 months in the pot.
