It remains uncertain if the Bay of Bengal depression will bring more heavy rain.

Weather bloggers noted that by Wednesday evening, the depression began to weaken, and the rain clouds surrounding it had dissipated. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), which had earlier issued a red alert, downgraded it to an orange alert later in the day. The forecast predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall of 6cm to 20cm in isolated areas when the depression crosses the coast, just north of Chennai, early Thursday.

An orange alert has been issued for seven northern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, and Tiruvannamalai.

Although rainfall in Chennai was minimal on Wednesday, many low-lying areas in north Chennai remained flooded until the afternoon. Unexpectedly, parts of Tiruvanmiyur, Taramani, and T Nagar, which were not affected by the previous flood, also saw flooding. Civic workers were busy pumping out water, and all subways were reopened by the afternoon.

While road conditions remained manageable, train commuters faced delays as several trains were held up.

After Tuesday's rain, Bengaluru might get a glimpse of sunshine by Thursday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

On Wednesday, the city experienced a few light-to-moderate showers, though the weather remained chilly and overcast.

Experts explained that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, which triggered Tuesday's downpours, has shifted from south-interior Karnataka toward the west and northwest off Andhra Pradesh's coast, leading to reduced rainfall.

"Thunderstorm activity is now concentrated over north-interior Karnataka, while Bengaluru and nearby areas will see lighter rain over the next two days, with mostly cloudy skies and occasional light-to-moderate showers. However, there will also be some sunshine across the city," said IMD scientist CS Patil.

Responding to opposition criticism over Bengaluru's rain crisis, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar defended the government’s preparedness, stating that "nature cannot be controlled" and calling on critics to stop damaging the state's reputation.

Expressing frustration, Shivakumar emphasized that the government is fully equipped to handle the recent heavy rains in the capital. “Can we control nature or stop cyclones? The government is more than capable of managing Bengaluru's unexpected downpours,” said Shivakumar, who also oversees the city's development.

His comments followed opposition claims that the city’s infrastructure was failing. "I've seen opposition posts online. The unexpected rains are a result of the cyclone's impact. Opposition parties, who don't grasp this, should refrain from tarnishing the state's image," he added.
