Rangers in Turmoil: Paul Bissonnette points to disconnect after the firing of Peter Laviolette

The New York Rangers are heading off to the offseason with more questions than answers. The abrupt exit of head coach Peter Laviolette, with a strong record last season at the helm, represents a fulcrum for the organization. The once-solid-looking push for the Stanley Cup is crumbling, and speculation about the deep issues within team dynamics is surfacing- issues that transcend beyond coaching.

Paul Bissonnette, after the Rangers’ decision to part ways with Peter Laviolette, pointedly raised what he considered some fundamental problems. On his Spittin' Chiclets podcast, the former NHL winger pointed out that the disconnection was not only between the coach and the players but also up into the management group. Bissonnette stated that there was inherent instability in the Rangers' locker room due to a lack of trust in the organization's leadership, with players fearing trades and feeling unsettled.

These comments come on the heels of a season tarnished with underperformance and in-house turbulence. Last year's Eastern Conference Finals appearance inspired optimism, which, to put it mildly, has gone south this year. The contract issues with players such as Igor Shesterkin were resolved, but the team was never able to find its rhythm. All that confusion and fear revolving around roster stability seems to have done most of the displacement this season under their feet.

Trade rumor winds swept through many Rangers players, and some of them were moved before the deadline. According to Bissonnette, this creates a toxic atmosphere, the opposite of what every other team has worked hard for to achieve success.

Rangers GM Chris Drury has publicly thanked Laviolette but has remained mum about the team's larger cultural issues. Now, entering an important hiring period to get a new head coach, much attention will remain on whether the front office can restore trust among players and restore internal cohesion.
