Wayne Gretzky, the former NHL player and head coach, has found himself in a controversy ever since the 4 Nations Face Off’s final. Ben Steiner had reported on the day of the final that the former NHL player gave a thumbs up to Team USA, and this caused a huge uproar on social media. Recently, Tim Peel, a former NHL referee, voiced his support for Wayne Gretzky, but this has angered fans more.
Wayne Gretzky’s Supporter, Tim Peel, Speaks Out In His Defense But Gets Heavily Slammed By Fans
Tim Peel recently appeared on the ‘Stripes and Stripes” podcast and slammed the ones who trolled Wayne Gretzky. He said, "I am utterly disgusted in the country that I grew up in and still love.”
Tim Peel also highlighted Wayne Gretzky’s contribution to Canadian hockey and said, “Now they're trying to cancel the greatest hockey player of all time, our friend Wayne Gretzky, who's done so much for Canadian hockey, is been the epitome of class his entire career."
But this has gotten backfired as Tim Peel’s statements have not gone down well with fans. A fan wrote, “We're not trying to cancel him. It's called holding someone accountable for their actions, and this case allegiance..”
Another fan reminded Tim Peel of his infamous cheating scandal in 2021 which led to him being fired. The fan wrote, “Tim "The Fired NHL Ref" disgusted in Canada??? Kind of how the NHL and Canada was/is disgusted by you and your cheating biased officiating.”
A third fan wrote, “No one is cancelling Wayne. They just don’t like a famous Canadian who is supporting an administration hurting Canada makes sense”.
Another user wrote, “We don’t owe Wayne Gretzky our respect anymore either”
Wayne Gretzky’s wife, Janet Jones, recently made a post on social media where she revealed that the former NHL star’s heart is broken with all the negative comments that have come in his way since the 4 Nations Face Off.
At the 4 Nations Face Off’s final match, the controversy began when Wayne Gretzki did not end up wearing the Team Canada jersey despite being the honorary captain of the Team. Additionally, he was also spotted giving a “thumbs up” to Team USA.
