Sidney Crosby is close to breaking Wayne Gretzky's record for the most point-per-game seasons in NHL history. Crosby, currently tied with Gretzky at 19, needs 15 more points this season to achieve the milestone. Despite the Pittsburgh Penguins' challenges, Crosby's performance remains strong, with 65 points in 61 games this year.

In spite of a rough night for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Sidney Crosby drew nearer to a significant milestone. While Alex Ovechkin is pursuing Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record, Crosby is poised to break another of Gretzky's records, as he currently stands tied with him for the most point-per-game seasons in NHL history at 19.
With 15 more points, he will have his 20th such season, breaking the tie. NHL play-by-play man Web Crosby pointed this out on Twitter, noting prior to the game that Crosby was only 16 points shy of reaching the mark. After adding another point, he has 65 points in 61 games this year.

Sidney Crosby is closing in on breaking another one of Wayne Gretzky's incredible feats

While the Pittsburgh Penguins didn't exactly have their best evening, Sidney Crosby moved closer to making history. While Alex Ovechkin is chasing Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record, Crosby is closing in on breaking another one of Gretzky's incredible feats.
The 4 Nations Face-Off champion currently shares the record for the most point-per-game seasons in NHL history with Gretzky at 19. However, he is within reach of claiming the top spot. As NHL reporter Web Crosby noted on Twitter, “He’s 16 points from a 20th point-per-game season. It would break a tie with Gretzky for the most ever.” After adding another point in his latest game, Crosby, now in his 20th NHL season, sits at 65 points in 61 games—just 15 points away from setting a new record.
Joe Yerdon of Bleacher Report suggests that the Pittsburgh Penguins may part ways with long-time center Sidney Crosby due to the unfavorable 2024-25 campaign, highlighting the potential for the move as part of the NHL Trade Deadline's biggest winners and losers.

“Things are tough in Pittsburgh. We’ve seen rumors kick up about whether or not Erik Karlsson could be dealt and lots of fans and other media around the league wonder if even captain Sidney Crosby could land with a contender (Colorado to play with Nathan MacKinnon?) if they decided to go for a full rebuild. It’s a bad place to be in and GM Kyle Dubas doesn’t have a lot of chips to use if he believes he can build the team up ahead of the deadline to make a wild card push.”

Crosby has represented Canada on multiple occasions, winning gold at the 2005 World Junior Championships and being named to Team Canada for the 2010 Winter Olympics. He captained Team Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics, winning his second consecutive Olympic gold medal. In 2016, he captained Canada to gold in the World Cup of Hockey and was elected MVP. In 2025, he captained Canada to a championship win in the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off. Crosby is a member of the Triple Gold Club and has captained all three winning teams.
